Hot Water Tank T&P (Temperature and Pressure) Relief Valves built with the
NPT (National Pipe Thread) discharge port.
History
The introduction of Pressure Relief Valves has been successful in preventing
the frequent catastrophic explosions of Water Heaters.

International Plumbing Code 2000 (Excerpts)
504.4 . . . The relief valve shall not be used as a means of controlling thermal
expansion.
504.1 Installation . . . For installations with separate storage tanks, the valves
shall be installed on the tank and there shall not be any type of valve installed
between the water heater and the storage tank. There shall not be a check
valve or shutoff valve between a relief valve and the heater or tank served.
504.6 Relief outlet waste. The outlet of a pressure, temperature or other relief
valve shall not be directly connected to the drainage system.
504.6.1. Discharge. The relief valve shall discharge full size to a safe place of
disposal such as the floor, outside the building, or an indirect waste receptor.
The discharge pipe shall not have any trapped sections and shall have a
visible air gap or gap fitting located in the same room as the water heater.

Location of T&P Relief Valve
The T&P Relief Valve is located at the top of the Water Tank posing a “Danger
when a malfunction occurs. This activates the T&P Relief Valve and the
discharge/blow off could potentially scald people. The NPT is the connection
of choice allowing a drainpipe to be attached to direct the “blow off” safely
away. THE STANDARD NPT CONNECTION ON T&P RELIEF VALVES IS NOT
ILLEGAL BUT IT BORDERS ON CRIMINAL.
The education of T&P Relief Valve Codes and Standards is working and lives
are being saved. BUT there is a continuing danger… The remaining problem
that has not been addressed up until now. “NPT IS AN INVITATION TO
LAYMEN AND PROFESSIONALS ALIKE TO PLUG THE T&P RELIEF VALVE
CIRCUMVENTING THE USEFULNESS OF THE T&P RELIEF VALVE AND
CREATING A POTENTIAL BOMB.”
NO AMOUNT OF INSPECTION, RE-INSPECTION, OR EDUCATION WILL
ELIMINATE THIS POTENTIAL DANGER. NO AMOUNT OF EDUCATION WILL
PREVENT PEOPLE FROM PLUGGING A DRIPPING, LEAKING AND ANNOYING
T&P RELIEF VALVE.

with the introduction of push-fit fittings.
